MoMA is showcasing the inspiration the Big Apple exerted on the world's top architects in the 1970s through a collection of drawings, projects and scale models reflecting both the pragmatic and utopian views of the city. "Dreamland," running from July 23 to October 27, features works by Raimund Abraham, Peter Eisenman, Steven Holl, Hans Hollein, and other well-known contemporary architects. The exhibition also presents "a number of new acquisitions, including works by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Diller + Scofidio, and Simon Ungers," MoMA said in a statement. "After the glamour of the 30s and 40s, in the 70s the city was bankrupt but at the same time it was the capital of economic power, with the World Trade Center built in 1974 as symbol of triumph of capitalism," Andres Lepik, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, told AFP. "At that moment, New York was the capital for the architects to go, there were very important people teaching here at cooper union and elsewere," he added. "Rem Koolhaas and other European architects like the Austrian mouvement, Hans Rucker-Co (1967-1992), Hans Hollein, Raimund Abraham, they all came by in the 70s and saw this city which was a completely different city from now." "The installation includes documentation of the real projects that resulted from these innovative ideas and experiments, including such traditional building types as single-family houses and skyscrapers," MoMA said. Situato a New York sulla 53ma strada, tra la Quinta e la Sesta Avenue (11 West 53rd Street), il MoMA – Museum of Modern Art è considerato il più importante polo espositivo dedicato all’arte moderna e contemporanea.
Inaugurato il 7 novembre 1929, al suo interno ci sono più di 150.000 opere tra progetti d’architettura, oggetti di design, disegni, dipinti, sculture, fotografie, serigrafie, illustrazioni, film e opere multimediali, oltre a 22.000 film e 4 milioni di fermi immagine. Inoltre nella biblioteca e negli archivi del MoMA ci sono più di 300.000 libri e periodici, e le schede personali di più di 70.000 artisti.
La sede del museo all’inizio è cambiata più volte, e il MoMA si è definitivamente stabilizzato in quella attuale solo nel 1937, ovvero il Time & Life Building all’interno del Rockefeller Center (apertura al pubblico: 10 maggio 1939). L’edificio è stato sottoposto a lavori di restauro tra il 2002 e il 2004.
Opere
Molti gli artisti presenti nelle sale del MoMA, ve ne citiamo soltanto alcuni: Paul Cézanne (come “Bagnante”, “Natura morta con mele”), Marc Chagall (“Io e il villaggio”), Frida Kahlo (“Autoritratto con i capelli corti”), Salvador Dalí (“La persistenza della memoria”), Pablo Picasso (“Les demoiselles d’Avignon”, “I tre musici”), Vincent Van Gogh (“Notte stellata”).
Presenti anche lavori di autori statunitensi come Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat e Edward Hopper.
Il giardino del museo è il celebre ‘Sculpture Garden’, che dal 2010 ospita l’installazione di Yoko Ono chiamata “Wish Tree”.

Il MoMA è facilmente raggiungibile con la metropolitana (Fifth Avenue/53rd Street sulle linee E e M).

I biglietti per gli adulti costano 25$, per gli over65 18$ e per gli studenti 14$. I ragazzi e i bambini sotto i 16 anni entrano gratis.
Il MoMA è anche aperto gratuitamente durante le UNIQLO Free Friday Nights (tutti i venerdì sera dalle 16 alle 20).
Esiste anche una succursale del MoMA, MoMA QNS, nel quartiere del Queens.
