Il terremoto che ha sconvolto il Nepal ha portato morti – al momento il bilancio ufficiale è di 4.400 – feriti e distruzione.
Case, palazzi, ma anche templi e centri storici completamente rasi al suolo dalla scossa di terremoto.
La valle di Kathmandu, con le sue cittadelle, contava ben sette siti inseriti nella lista dell’Unesco, tra stupa buddisti, templi hindu e palazzi. Molti di questi, oggi, sono stati rovinati dalle scosse. Come i quattro monumenti storici sulla Basantpur Durbar Square di Kathmandu, fra cui il Kasthmandap temple. A questi si aggiunge il Gorkha Palace di Kathmandu, una parte (Guhyeshwari Gajur) del Pashupatinath Temple, il Jaisi Dewal nel Kohiti Tole della Durbar Square di Kathmandu, i templi Hari Shankar e Uma Shankar della Durbar Square di Patan e il Kalmochan Temple di Thapathali nella valle di Kathmandu.

La Durbar Square (piazza reale), definita come il cuore “sociale, religioso e urbano” di Kathmandu oggi è un cumulo di macerie, detriti e polvere. Il palazzo reale Basantapur Durbar (Nautale) è in buona parte collassato. Monumenti come il tempio di Kumari e il Taleju Bhawani, tra gli altri, sono parzialmente collassati. Parzialmente distrutti anche il tempio di Jay Bageshwori a Gaushala e il templio di Pashupatinath. Sono stati riportati danni anche per quanto riguarda il complesso religioso di Swyambhunath, il palazzo di Gorkha e il grande stupa di Boudhanath.
