La sua sede attuale, che si trova sul lato destro di Central Park (lungo il Museum Mile/Miglio dei musei), risale al 1926 e fu progettata da Richard Morris Hunt.
Fondato nel 1872 il Met contiene due milioni di opere d’arte divise in 19 settori diversi:
arte egizia; arte mediorientale antica; arte greca e romana; arte asiatica; arte africana, oceanica, e americana; arte islamica; arte medievale (nella sede secondaria chiamata The Cloisters); pittura europea; scultura ed arti decorative europee; pittura e scultura statunitensi; arti decorative statunitensi; disegni e stampe; la collezione Robert Lehman; arte moderna; armi e armature; l’Istituto costumi e abbigliamento; fotografia; strumenti musicali; le biblioteche
Nel 1986 è stato inserito nella lista dei National Historic Landmark.
Recentemente il museo ha deciso di mettere a disposizione più di 400.000 immagini di opere della collezione ad alta risoluzione digitale per l’uso non commerciale (anche per pubblicazioni scientifiche su qualsiasi media senza autorizzazione dal Metropolitan e senza tasse) nell’ambito di un’iniziativa denominata Open Access for Scholarly Content (OASC).

L’indirizzo del Met è 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, ed è aperto 7 giorni alla settimana. Osserva i seguenti orari:
da domenica a giovedì: 10-17.30
venerdì e sabato: 10-21
Resta chiuso il giorno del Ringraziamento, il 25 dicembre, 1° gennaio e il primo lunedì di maggio.
Il biglietto comprende la visita alla collezione temporanea, alla sezione già citata The Cloisters, ai giardini del museo e include anche la visita alle mostre temporanee.
Il costo è 25$ per gli adulti, 17$ per gli over65, 12$ per gli studenti. I minori di 12 anni entrano gratuitamente.
