E’ il monumento più fotografato di Berlino. L’East Side Gallery, il tracciato più lungo del Muro di Berlino rimasto in piedi, diventato monumento internazionale alla libertà, con i suoi murales di artisti di ogni parte del mondo.
Un muro lungo circa 3 chilometri, che dal 1992 è considerato monumento protetto. Anche se fino a qualche giorno fa la voce che girava era che l’East Side Gallery sarebbe stato abbattuto.
La notizia, riportata su tutti i quotidiani berlinesi, ha subito suscitato l’indignazione degli abitanti, quando hanno saputo che al posto del Muro sarebbe dovuto sorgere un mega albergo di lusso. Così lo scorso marzo sono scesi in tanti a manifestare davanti al monumento, per evitare che venisse buttato giù uno degli ultimi ricordi di uno dei periodi più bui di Berlino, ma comunque un ricordo da mantenere indelebile per le future generazioni.
E così, dopo un mese di protese, il Bezirksbaustadtrat di Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Hans Panhoff ha annunciato che il muro non verrà scalfito e resterà lì, per almeno altri 5 anni. Nel 2020, infatti, si ritornerà a parlare di questa situazione che al momento è stata solo prorogata.
La East Side Gallery sorge sulla Mühlenstrasse, fra la stazione Berlin Ostbahnhof e la fermata metropolitana di Berlin Warschauer Strasse, nel quartiere di Friedrichshain.
Quando venne abbattuto il muro, questo pezzo venne affidato agli artisti di murales dell’epoca perché la dipingessero con temi riguardanti la pace. Da quel momento la East Side Gallery è considerata la galleria d’arte all’aperto più grande del mondo. Essa consiste di circa 106 murales di artisti internazionali, che hanno decorato il muro con murales storici, come quello del bacio fra Erich Honecker e Leonid Brežnev e la Trabant che sfonda il muro stesso.
