Nato nel 1882 l’artista, che morì nel 1967, nelle sue opere immortalava soprattutto immagini urbane di New York e le scogliere e spiagge del New England.
Un esempio molto chiaro del suo stile è “Nighthawks”, opera conosciuta anche come “I nottambuli” del 1942 (conservata all’Art Institute of Chicago), in cui Hopper raffigura un bar notturno con pochissimi avventori – immaginiamo anche silenziosi – ovvero un uomo ritratto di spalle e una coppia ritratta frontalmente. Insieme a loro è presente il barista, totalmente immerso nel suo lavoro. L’atmosfera è davvero solitaria, dato che in strada e sul marciapiede non c’è anima viva.
Altra opera iconica è “The House by the Railroad” ovvero “La casa vicino alla ferrovia” (1925), conservata presso il Whitney Museum of American Art, che raffigura una bellissima casa vittoriana isolata, circondata dal nulla.
